Phoenix: April 22nd, 2006
He breaks the kiss suddenly and my heart sinks. Hear his sharp intake of breath and fear coils through me.
What if he runs for the door? What if he runs out of my life?
Finally raise my eyes to see startled and confused green.
He rocks slightly on the couch like he wants to bolt, and I drop my eyes again.
“Go. I’ll understand.”
Wait for the door, for hurried footsteps….
That never come.
Look up in confusion to see his smile, even if it’s a little forced.
“It’s your plane, June. Doubt they’ll leave without you.”
He’s staying.
