We all assumed he knew.
But the pain in his eyes that echoes the sorrow in my heart reveals how wrong we were. He silently surveys the garage around him and I know he must wonder how long we all betrayed him with our silence…and I can’t take anymore.
“Hey, Kev,” I say as sorrowful, pale green eyes turn to me. “Wanna get a beer or something after practice?”
Silence.
And then an accusing look before he finally murmurs, “Maybe another time, June,” and starts to walk away.
Sadness and guilt fill me until I hear his soft whisper.
“Thanks….”
