He did it again. I really can’t believe he did it again.

Oh I’ve heard about the rolls he used to get on. I remember seeing him on TV long before we ever met. But, now…now I get to see it first hand, and I never dreamed it would be so amazing.

He doesn’t act like it’s any big thing. He just smiles, accepts the award and takes the picture. But that’s just him. Could he ever be as good as he is if he truly understood what he does? I just don’t think so.

I see Robbie mock bowing to him once the pole is his and he just laughs pointing at his crew chief as if it was all in the set up. Doesn’t he even realize how in awe of him his crew is? How in awe of him most of the garage is?

Junior comes out of his team hauler parked between mine and the flame rig. I see him look over at him in his Dupont T-shirt giving his fourth interview in 10 minutes. Junior just shakes his head with a small smile and wanders off probably to his motor coach. I bet that’s a reaction he never even sees. His best competitors amazed at some accomplishment he makes look so easy. If he does notice, he doesn’t take them seriously.

Was it just a few weeks ago when I met him in his motor coach after the Michigan race ready to console him after his blown engine? Not that he needed it. “It’s no big deal Jimmie,” he tells me. “There’s always a race next week,” and what a week it was.

No matter how anyone tried no one could touch him in Sonoma. King of the Road, isn’t that what they call him? You should have seen the way they love him in California. Finally he as more cheers than boos, but when I bring this up to him he just shrugs and says, “As long as they’re making noise.” Well, they do make noise for him…no matter where he goes.

I couldn’t even believe him last week when he tried to give me all the credit for his win at Daytona. Sure I gave him a push, but what choice did I have? Did he really think I could pass him? Did he really think I had a chance?

I have to laugh to myself because I know the answer to that one. How many time have we sat on his couch in his motor coach with him telling me how great I am? “You’re better than I was when I was a rookie Jimmie. You’re going to win championships, just wait. You’re gonna be better than me.” Those are the times I think he’s really insane.

Well, finally I get to see it in person. The famous streak…win after win, pole after pole. How many wins should he have this season already? Six? Eight? More? You would think it would make you hate him, that he would be an arrogant bastard. But, it doesn’t. It just makes me love him more.
