After the Chevy Rock and Roll 400 - Richmond International Raceway
I tried.
I tried so hard to get Jeff into the "Drive for Five." But my heart hasn't been in it for…a year. God. A year. I wasn't there for my mother when she was at her sickest. Now, I watch him head quickly for his escape.
I'm sorry, Jeff. I wanted the championship so much too. But now I'm going home. Back to the Petty's where I got my start. I'll still be there on the other end of the phone when you call. But it'll be easier with Chad next week. Moving on. Letting Jeff sort his ashes and rebuild for next season.
Jeff likes Steve. It will be good.
I could stop Jeff now. Tell him how sorry I am. But, he knows. And I know he needs to be alone. Racing is everything to him. Winning is just a bonus. Now, it's over. I'll tell him tomorrow that I'm leaving. Or…
No. I have to go. I need the life I've given up for years. Steve is young but he's been around. Chad will take care of him. Alan will support him. It's become a sport for the young.
Sighing, I help pack up the cart. My last time. Perhaps it's appropriate in the end…. We're each alone. Jimmie in the top ten…alone. Jeff in his motorcoach…alone. And, me, saying goodbye to my home of years…alone. I have just one message to leave for Jeff. I'm sorry. Sorry for the disappointment. Sorry for the cars. Sorry for the abandonment.
