"Night of Victory" Deer Creek Speedway; Spring Valley, Minnesota
It feels like days before my jet lands in Spring Valley, but really it's been two hours, tops. It's amazing what a $1,000 tip will get you. My pilot took one look at the roll of bills I handed him and we were in the air in record time. Thank god for money. I might not always be willing to part with it, but I know when to throw it away for a good reason. Saving the kid from Kevin is more than enough to hand over some Benjamins.
With a quick thank you I bolt off the jet and zoom through the private airport. All it takes to get a rental car is a wink at the attendant along with another hundred dollar tip, and soon I'm behind the wheel of a corvette, the GPS on my phone leading the way to the dirt track. Quals should be starting by now and if I'm lucky I'll make it to the pits unnoticed. My only hope is that Kevin hasn't gotten him alone yet.
"Shit…" curse under my breath when I see the crowds of people waiting to get into the pits. This might be harder than I thought. I pull the collar of my jacket up and tug the bill of my faded Redskins hat down, trying to slump into myself. If I can keep a low profile, I'll be alright for a while.
"Yes!" I let out a silent shout of joy when I spot some guys I know working security and bolt over to them, quickly explaining that I need to find Kevin and Landon. I give them a bullshit story about changing my mind last minute over an invitation and they send me through, pointing me in the direction of a tent where a driver meet and greet is about to start. Perfect. I can grab the kid and make a run for it.
I walk into the hospitality tent just in time to see Landon spring up out of his chair, shrieking like a girl. I couldn't figure out what was wrong until Kevin pulled him back down and leaned over to whisper in his ear. He'd done something to freak the kid out, and by the look on his face now, whatever was said to him isn't helping matters. I swallow thickly and watch as Landon slumps down in his seat, seemingly defeated. Kevin's managed to crack him, at least for now. My heart flutters as I find a chair near the back, my eyes trained on them the entire time. If Kevin tries something, I'll know. Don't know what I'll do, exactly, but at least I'll have seen it with my own eyes.
Yawning softly, I slump down in my chair, half listening as fans pass around a microphone, asking the drivers questions. It's like a fist to the gut when Landon speaks; for anyone who doesn't know him, it'd be imperceptible, but I can hear the waver in his voice. Whatever Kevin's been up to, he's got the kid's knees knocking. My blood starts to boil as I think up ways to get him back for this. If one hair on that boy's head is out of place, there'll be hell to pay. Not sure yet what I'll do, but when I figure it out, it'll be good.
The Q&A finally ends an eternity later, and now I'm faced with a dilemma. How do I get to Landon without anyone spotting me, namely Kevin. Scan the tent to figure out an escape route and I'm in motion before I can even tell my feet to move. Slide around a group of girls giggling over one of the local drivers and slip out an opening near the back of the tent, near the drivers table. The sun shines bright in my eyes and I have to blink a few times before I can gain my bearings. I scan the area, forcing down a predatorial growl when I spot them; Kevin with a hand locked tight on Landon's wrist as he leads them away from the tent.
Still though…
Morbid curiosity has me hanging back; wanting to see what Kevin has planned. I follow after them, staying out of sight as best I can without losing them. Maybe he'll just scare the kid. Lord knows Kevin gets off on making people squirm, and it don't take much to get Landon in a panic. If he does try something, though, I got no problem with rearranging his face.
"C'mon Shaggy, chill out. I told you already, I just wanna have a little fun before the shootout…" I recognize the dangerous tone in Kevin's voice as he leads a protesting Landon into a tent marked "Private".
"B-but I-" Landon tries to stutter out a plea but it gets cut off abruptly. I bolt for the tent, peaking in to see what's going on.
The sight before me almost blows my cover. I have to bite my fist to keep from giggling. Kevin's stripped down to his boxers and Landon's staring at him, wide-eyed in shock, with his jaw hanging open. It's like he's never seen a guy in his shorts before. Then again, this IS Kevin and at any moment he could drop his shorts and convince the kid to give him head. I go to barge in but Kevin reaches for his firesuit, a smirk planted on his face.
"Christ, kid, what's wrong? You never seen a guy change before?" There's laughter in his voice as he pulls his suit up around his waist and a mocking glint in his eyes. Whatever he's been doing to Landon all day, it's been nothing but a mind game.
"I…I thought you…" Landon's face turns a magnificent shade of red, "What was all that touching about earlier? Grabbing my thigh and all that whispering about having fun?" His voice rises and falls, stretched thin with confusion. Kid looks ready to cry again and I have to stifle my laughter. Any fool can see this is a fun game for Kevin, but Landon's oblivious to it.
Kevin's smirk grows wider and this time the flecks of gold in his eyes are far from dangerous. He looks ready to howl with laughter, "Hell Kid, you're crazy if you think I want anything to do with your virgin ass! I TOLD you, we're just having a little fun before the race. Well, I'm having fun, anyway. Apparently no one ever told you about this thing called sarcasm."
Suddenly Landon's face darkens and it's obvious he's finally picked up on Kevin's games, "You've gotta be kidding me! This whole time you've been trying to freak me out and make me cry? I thought you were going to molest me or something!"
Kevin's face lights up with glee at Landon's outburst, "Freak you out, sure. Cry, no. Although, it'd make my day if you did. Are you gonna cry, Shaggy? Anything I can do to help speed up the process?"
The pout on Landon's face turns into a scowl and I swear in a second he's going to stomp his foot and throw a tantrum. Kevin looks to be enjoying this as much as I am, and with no chance of him trying anything for real, I know I don't have to be here anymore. Landon'll be fine, physically anyway. Kevin might make his night a living hell, but he's not going to force the kid into anything like I originally thought. Hell, I can't believe I even feel for Kevin's tricks in the first place.
