It was one of those nights when the moonlight coming in through the window cast weird shadows on the walls. Dawn could remember nights like this when she was younger -- nights when she would have jumped out of bed to run into her parent's bedroom and beg to sleep with them.

It was a monster in the closet and beast under the bed sort of night, though she was too old now to fear such things.

It was Halloween, and she'd gotten through it without any unexpected interactions with vampires, ghosts or other demons. There'd been a party at the school gym and she'd gotten in some solid flirting time with Jason Madison, who was shaping up to be
the star on this year's swim team. And there'd been chocolate cupcakes with orange frosting, and a bowl of fruit punch with dry ice in the bottom so it bubbled like a witch's cauldron.

Now, it was over, and she was trying to get Jason's blue eyes off her mind and go to sleep.

That's when she heard it.

Thump.

She sat up and looked around. Nothing had moved. It was quiet again. The shadows on the walls were creepy, but nothing she hadn't seen before.

Thump, thump.

Dawn held still, held her breath, strained her senses to determine where the sound was coming from.

A low moan filtered through the walls. It slowly rose in pitch, then cut off suddenly.

Thump, thump, thump.

She heard the moan again, a thin, wailing sound that rose in pitch until it was a high, clear note.

Thump, thump, thump.

Then a lower moan. A moan that seemed to come from the deepest part of a man's soul. A throaty cry that drew out then ended with a sudden "Uph..."

Thump, thump, thump, thump.

The sound of a woman panting, as if she was holding on for dear life before...

"Oh, Spike! Yes! Yes! Now... please, now!"

Dawn slipped out of bed and pounded on the wall.

"Would you two try to keep it down? I've got to go to school in the morning!"
